Can you press the Golden Buzzer?
112 – The 911 System of South Africa
SVS has proven on a micro level that it can truly have a massive effect of change for an individual case and in turn our country. It is a smart process because it sets positive energy into motion no matter the relationship, and new relationships are then systematically formed and captured. This means that resource capacity is constantly being built from grassroots efforts up to the national teams.
Critically this translates into victim empowerment and overall success which is the core reason emergency services are activated. In my world, I signed up to save thousands of lives and not just one, no different to any person in emergency services because this is my chosen career path. I have also chosen to move into the cloud so that we could become boardless as well as facilitate the development of technology tools that scale capacity and improve outcomes.
You can never go back!
Although an SVS activation can take place at any point, the longer it takes the less likely the overall success of the case. This is simply because you can never go back on a case “timeline” and activate the process that should have taken place at a specific point in history, or even more importantly, the collaboration process creating the powerhouse of the Specialised Victim Support.
ICASA recorded 53.4 million smartphone subscriptions as of 30 September 2019, a few million shy of the country’s total population size, and although this does not indicate penetration of that number, it does point to the fact that this tool has the most reach into the nation. South Africa’s estimated population stood at 58.78 million, according to the 2019 mid-year population figure released by Statistics SA.
112 is South Africa’s chosen number and the mandated 911 system in every cell phone user’s hands. It is a centre that is recognised worldwide not only for South Africans but also for any person travelling in our country. It is also the most neutral centralised place to access all of the country’s emergency services and responses.
It has zero cost to the end-user and is a centre that already has an infrastructure reaching into every rural settlement, rural area, farming, township or urban environment, as well as being equipped to deal with calls in the caller’s choice of language.
This could be a tool used in every home where a tailor-made crime reduction plan can be activated, centrally coordinated, and a platform to access all resources
We believe that in partnership, SVS can be one of the key turns at the start for priority crimes collaboration responses and long term support and management in this centre. Furthermore, IMICS already has over 450 different case types to manage a significant variety of cases and with Generation 11 on the horizon, technology that is totally pioneering.
The 112 platform, if leveraged correctly, and collaboration included, could be the technology support of the best offerings available to our citizens and international visitors (that help drive our economy), in a truly collaborative environment. This would enable private emergency response businesses who wish to compete and offer their services to tap into the platform and provide support. This would mean all resources including government, private and NGOs could be accessed, and over time a live resource heat map could be harnessed. Over and above your personal choice, you would therefore be able to access all collaboration networks as the need may arise.
An open and collaborative environment such as this with supportive integration can ensure that the right information gets to the right place at the right time – and is used in the right capacity to optimise insight for future development, critically crime reduction management and collaboration responses.
If you are someone that is in charge of the 112 network, or can put us in touch with the right people, and would like to push a “The Golden Buzzer” for the nation, let’s explore the opportunities of developing our 112 centre in line with some thinking I have mentioned. What do you think about the idea? Your comments are invaluable to me?
