Thought for the Day!
I was recently stopped in a department store by a lady who was holding a R199.00 rechargeable light in her hands. Considering whether or not to buy it, She asked me how it worked and how it charged.
She told me her children needed to study and load shedding meant that they couldn’t. She went on to explain that she did not allow her children to light paraffin lamps and electricity was only used for the essentials, like charging, cooking and study time.
The reason for this was that, some time ago, her home had been one of many houses burnt to the ground as the result of a candle that had fallen over, with one child succumbing and an entire community left without homes. She could not risk this ever happening again as she had several children including a baby, and before she returned home in the evenings after work the older children had to care for the younger ones, often in the dark.
She said that one light in the home could light up the entire dwelling, and two would be a luxury, so the opportunity of acquiring an LED lamp would change their lives considerably.
I explained to her that these rechargeable lights are safe, bright, and emitted zero heat, therefore posing no danger to her children. It could also recharge her cellphone – another handy convenience when the power was off.
Many lessons come from this, but the biggest, I think, is to tell others about it. Check with your staff, family and friends… Do they know about rechargeable, multipurpose lighting?
A gift or two would go a long way to help those at grass roots level.
We can all help one another, and small things can sometimes make a huge difference to those less fortunate…
