A AAA Response (TrackBox) member called our ERPC to report a robbery in progress at a shopping centre in Newcastle.

There were four suspects, three of them armed with handguns and one standing outside with a rifle.
A getaway vehicle was seen, and the description given to SAPS who sent a unit to the centre to intercept the robbers.

I kept in touch with the member to make sure that she was safe and to gain information on the unfolding situation. She was able to see the direction in which the vehicle fled, and this information was given to SAPS members who then alerted their mobile units to look out for it.

MALL SAFETY

South Africans love shopping and there are approximately 2000 malls to choose from, putting SA in the top 10 countries with the largest number of shopping centres. However media reports of crime and armed robberies targeted at malls leave a lot of shoppers and tenants wondering how safe they are. Experts agree that a lot is being done regarding security – but there is always room for improvement.

SAFETY TIPS WHEN SHOPPING

  • When it comes to spotting potential criminals, shoppers should look out for people who look nervous as this can indicate that they don’t want to be noticed.
  • Also, watch out for customers picking up and putting back the same item repeatedly. People wearing large items of clothing or carrying big bags should also be watched closely.
  • Make sure your car is locked, don’t leave handbags unattended when at restaurants, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Cell phones are a huge distraction – criminals use this to their advantage.
  • Jewellery, cell phone outlets & ATM’s are the main targets of criminals – be cautious when in or around these types of shops/areas.
