I am not sure if this is for everyone, but the hardest thing I ever had to deal with was understanding love. I believe this is the key underlying quality in every aspect of my life including work – to love what I do.

Over the years I have developed my own ways of expressing this and draw from this as part of my inner strength and foundation. Many of you would have heard me say “I love you, friend” or “I am married to you in friendship/partnership”. This goes for organisations like the SAPS, Hawks and Crime Intelligence, private organisations as well as close friends and staff.

It is actually the most powerful communication tool and when locking on to another person or group and talking from a place of love, everyone connects no matter the topic! It’s also a position which allows me to drum up the instant fire required to absolutely conquer anything in order to protect those that I love. On the odd occasion some have confused this with anger, and for that matter so have I – this reminds me that I am human…

Most of us understand that love consists of a very complex set of emotions which drive our behaviour and even our personal beliefs, and so also determines our levels of respect and trust. It drives our curiosity and our productivity, and once you have love tamed it has no limits, giving birth to our dreams, passion and our life’s journey.

So, to all my friends, to South Africa, as we look to the future and look back at those things past; to my dreams for a nation and to all the Operatives and the community heroes I work with; to my staff, my wife, kids and parents, to my world, may this Valentine’s Day be something uniquely special as we pause and remember just how much we love each other, our homeland, our country – and remember that love and our freedom to love is what we are fighting so hard for. Love is a common purpose which we share.
