AWAITING TRIAL ESCAPEE RE-ARRESTED

DURBAN – An awaiting trial prisoner who escaped from Westville prison two months ago using another prisoner’s particulars has finally been re-arrested at his hide-out in Umbilo. He was arrested in the early hours of this morning and will be charged with escaping from lawful custody.

The suspect, Ashen Vishnudath (27) was in custody for a murder case that was reported at the Mariannhill police station in March this year. He is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. Another suspect (53) who was arrested on Friday, 11 October 2019 at Reservoir Hills for defeating the ends of justice, is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court today.

Two awaiting prisoners, Sudeshan Govender (34) and Tashlin Israel (27) were arrested on 17 August 2019 for aiding the prisoner to escape. They will be re-appearing at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court today.

On 15 August 2019, Ashen Vishnudath (27) was awaiting trial at Westville prison when he allegedly used other prisoner’s particulars to escape. A case of escaping from lawful custody was opened at the Westville police station and the docket was assigned to Provincial Organised Crime Unit for further investigation. Detectives were on his trail since he escaped from custody until this morning when he was arrested.
