Dispatcher Files

Often in the ERPC (control room) we receive calls from members about domestic violence.. Although there are cases of general domestic violence reported, the majority of calls reported to us involve violence against women.

I remember seeing a video posted recently by a young woman; it had gone viral, but was something I could not agree with. She said something along the lines that if a man, your husband or boyfriend, raises his hand to you or abuses you, then that means he loves you. She then said that when you are abused by a man it means he loves you because he is willing to take the risk of a criminal case against him as well as a jail sentence.

This is something we strongly disagree with; if you are loved and respected by someone, you should not have to go through physical or emotional abuse from that partner. Physical or mental abuse can eventually take its toll on a person; it will destroy your self-esteem and your way of life (and can lead to depression) and may in turn lead to a situation where you may feel that suicide is the only answer, or way out. Many people fall victim to abuse whether it be physical or emotional, and they feel too scared to reach out for help.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that anyone who is going through this situation to please be strong. To those women who are being abused it is important to pick yourself up and stand up, not only for yourself but for your family. Teach your mother, sisters, daughters to be strong and teach them that it’s not ok to accept this kind of treatment; teach them to stand up for themselves; and for those parents with sons, teaching them that this is not the way to treat anyone.

I urge our members to report those who they suspect of abuse, and to be of support to those being abused.
