On my evening shift I received a call on our TrackBox ERPC duty phone from a young lady asking for us to call an ambulance for her brother. She sounded worried and panicky but after I calmly asked her what had happened she was able to tell me that her brother was experiencing chest pains and feeling weak, as he had not been eating and taking his medication, making his illness worse.. She was afraid that he would not make it through the night.
They lived in a township so they requested a state ambulance. Due to their location I made sure I got her name and number and also an alternative number in case her battery died. I also obtained details of a landmark nearby in order to assist the paramedics in finding the house.
I then arranged for the ambulance, making sure to give the paramedics all the patient’s details and precise location. I then called the young lady back and asked her to keep the line clear to enable the paramedics to call her for directions when they were in the area.
Later on, I made a follow-up call and was pleased to hear that the ambulance had arrived and they were on their way to hospital.
It’s important to make sure that when we come across family members who are on medication that we remind them to stick to the dosage prescribed to prevent incidents such as this one.
I was proud of this young lady for being bold and taking the step of calling us to help her brother. Sometimes our family members may not want to go to hospital but she did a great job in summoning the necessary help.
We need to support one another, whether it be a family member or a neighbour. In doing so, we also help to make our community a safer and better place to live in.
