IMICS Case# 1060
Cliff – Tractor Roll (Melmoth) – nearest response: 60 minutes.
“The hardest part about human performance and perfection is recognising that it is only achieved by teamwork.” (Brian Jones)
The TrackBox Technologies ERPC (Emergency Response and Prevention Centres) received a AAA-Response activation from one of our Corporate Client members to report a tractor that had rolled, with one of their team members in a critical condition.
Most of you will know that the team of NetCare Advanced Life Support, High Angle Rescue, and Flight Operations is a seamless national operation with Netcare 911’s helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) operating six dedicated, permanently configured, ICU-equipped Bell 222 twin-engine air ambulances at the disposal of our members. Every premium member is directly linked and integrated into over 980 ERPC branches countrywide, and the collaboration network of which NetCare 911 is a part.
It requires the simple tap of a button from the user to alert our dispatchers and includes the GPS location of the victim preloaded. The network and high impact trauma system is totally holistic with regards to case management and saving of lives, and in emergency situations like this you can see the power of the R10 million investment into the AAA-Response Platform, and of course the 17 years of relationship-building and networking behind that power, which you simply cannot put a value on, other than showing the daily results of lives saved.
The final timeline was as follows:
|12:16 – AAA-Activation:||Hospital turnaround time is 5 hours. The senior national ERPC Dispatchers can authorise flights for our members supported by the NetCare 911 flight desk should the need arise.|
|12:43 – 27 Minutes:||First Aider on scene. Reports patient critical. Distance from medical attention, and roads a very real concern threatening the loss of life.|
|13:42 – 86 Minutes:||NetCare 2 Airborne: spoke with St Anne’s Hospital: patient was approved by doctor and staff on duty.|
|14:01 – 105 Minutes:||47 Min. flight: NetCare 2 Air Ambulance on Scene Crew mobile to scene via bakkie. Patient stabilised and packaged for transport in Helicopter to St Anne’s|
|15:01 – 165 Minutes:||NetCare 2 Airborne to St Anne’s Hospital|
|15:41 – 205 Minutes:||40 min. flight; NetCare 2 lands on helipad, met by full casualty team|
I prefer not to single people out because I truly believe that no single person or organisation can take credit for saving lives – it just does not work like that. In this case, at a quick count, there were at least 14 emergency service personnel involved. However, to the first aider who attended the patient, you really did an outstanding job. This illustrates that all community members should be trained in first aid. In the emergency services world the saying goes: “If you can save just one life it was worth it,” and in our world we want to save thousands, but this cannot be done without support, receiving the calls, and working with the public.
I believe those who randomly put themselves out there by always being on standby to help any other human beings are the true heroes of our country. And that, my friends, should be each and every one of you reading this.
